Race Report:

A while back, someone had posted to this list about the Wombat Challenge. They run a few challenges a year, and for each one you have a time window to complete certain distances in swimming, biking, and running. You complete a virtual "tour" of a certain place, in this case Scandinavia, but you put in your miles at your own pace, wherever you'd like.

This Challenge started in late January. We had ice and snow on the ground, and my motivation was not exactly at its highest, so I decided to sign up. I figured maybe it would help me to be happy about riding on my trainer and running on a treadmill. While I'm not sure I'm ever really happy training indoors, this event was definitely a big motivator for me this winter.

The 10-week challenge ended on Sunday, and I placed 27th overall (out of about 82 people), and 10th American. The placing is basically determined by your total distance in the events versus the goal distances. Pace has nothing to do with it. Over the 10 weeks the targets were to swim 47,500 yards, bike 923 miles, and run 303 miles. I knew the run goal was out of range for me, so I focused on the other two. I wound up swimming 53,250 yards (10th place), biking 1,187.5 miles (6th place), and running 72 miles (59th place).

Their next challenge starts May 31, and is called the "Tour of Altitude". I'm not sure what that means, but am thinking about signing up.

Plus, the people who run this thing are based in Australia in a town called Woolloomooloo. How can you not like that?!?!?
