Nice little race, but fast. |
Race Report:
I originally planned to run the St Paddy's Day 10K on Saturday, but I couldn't work the logistics out (kid's activities, etc.). So I looked around for an alternate and decided to make the 1 hour drive down to Fredericksburg for, what I thought would be, a quiet little 5K.
This was my first race since New Year's Day and I had been struggling through some interval work on the track since then trying to recover some long lost speed. So I toe'd the line not really sure what I could do.
It was a fast start with a slew of high school kids taking off. One guy, wearing a Footlocker South Regional XC singlet, looked legit. He had a 30 meter lead on the field after the first 200! I let him and what seemed like 20 others go. Even so, I think I went out too fast. This was confirmed when I went by the mile and checked my watch...5:32!!! Wow...either the intervals are working, or I'm about to die big time. Or both. The second mile was a struggle to maintain, but still managed to hang in there catching a few here and there and only two passed me. That final mile was a bear, especially when you add in all the 90 degree turns. Each mile got gradually slower.
For a race that is less than 20 minutes long, it sure did hurt. I had a nice 40 min warm down through the old/historic part of town and the Mary Washington campus. Post race food was bananas and gatorade. Stayed through the awards ceremony and was home by noon. Overall, a good race, and a nice way to spend a Sunday morning.
