Before I sum this up, just wanted to mention, this was the coldest water I have ever gotten into. The water temperature was 64 degrees. It took about 300 yards for my arms to feel normal. The air temperature was perfect around 60 to 65 degrees and the course was almost perfectly flat. The only issue on the bike course was the 15-20 mph head winds which did turn into a nice tail wind on the way back.
So in a nut shell; I was 38th out of the water, had a good T1 and starting riding as hard as I could. I passing lots of people, some folks came along for the ride. Going out we had the wind, average pace was about 19.5 mph. After the turn around decided it was time to say goodbye to the folks hang on and went after some folks in front of me. Average pace heading back was 25 mph. Ended up entering T2 in 8th position. The run was tough, I may have lost a couple of minutes on the run due to my hard riding, but I gained 4 minutes on the bike from my previous race. Sounds like a gain in the right direction. To make me feel a little better about being pasted on the run, everyone that pasted me ran a better 5K than my PR.
BTW, just my luck they only gave awards for the first 2 places.
So this is really my last Triathlon of 2011. Duathlon anyone?
