Comment: First race of the season, first bike in the rain

Race Report:

Overall, I was satisfied with my day, even with all the "firsts", including the following:
* First time swimming open water this year
* First time using a full wetsuit in a race
* First time riding the rental bike was at the race (I mentioned in a previous mail to the list about possibly saying why, but it's too embarrassing me to share until I know you better....)
* First time biking in the rain in a race
* First time trying out a new gel (Hammer gel)...and yes, I know that's a big no-no
* First time really doing the full transitions (I guess I can blame the second kid on not having the time, and can get away with it since he's only 10 months old and can't talk yet)

Swim:
Time=25:41
Got a cramp in my foot at the very beginning of the swim (not a good sign). Swam ok, kept getting cramps in my legs or feet, just didn't feel "powerful", and so didn't swim nearly as fast as I had hoped.

Bike:
Time=1:51:52
First race in the rain, and then adding in that it was cold and windy, it made for an interesting ride. My goal was to bike at 17 miles/hr, and my bike computer said 16.9, so I was satisfied with essentially hitting my goal. :-)

Run:
Time=1:08:15
Slower than I had hoped. I got massive cramps in both thighs about 1/2 mile in, and had to stretch. What annoys me about my running is that I seem to average 10 min/mile (almost exactly), whether I like it or not. In this case, I somehow made up the time stretching, and was at 40 minutes around 4 miles in, but then slowed down the last couple miles as my legs cramped up again (but I wasn't willing to stop and stretch since I was so close to the end).

It was great to see my family at the end, particularly the smiles from my boys. :-D

This was my "C" race, with Escape from Fort Delaware as my B, and Reston as my A. Someday soon, I hope to begin training with some of youse guys out on the W&OD....
Now all I need to work on besides improving my base for all three, is work on transitions, more open water swims, and figuring out how to stop getting cramps during the swim and run.
