Race Report:

This is a fast, flat 5k put on by the local high school to support the track team. There is always a large turnout due to the 50 plus gift certificates and other schwag they raffle off to participants. It was a gorgeous day for a race, with the exception that there were constant 15mph winds, with gusts up to 30mph. We all knew at some point of the course we would be running into that wind.

The course runs threw the neighborhoods of Daniel Island, and back up the main drag to start/finish at the high school. There were approximatley 400 runners in the race this year. I was chatting it up at the front with another guy who was racing with his son in a jogging stroller. We were laughing about not letting go of the handlebar in a tailwind or he would never catch his son. Needless to say, this guy pulled off an impressive 20:00 finish. The gun sounded and the feet started poundin'. The wind was being blocked by the houses in the back neighborhoods for the first two miles, and we all knew that the last mile down the main drag, into the wind, would be brutal.

1 mile = 6:20 (uh oh...did I come out to fast)
2 mile = 6:40 (wind picking up, settled into a better pace)
3+ mile = 8:00 (wall of wind, definitely came out to fast)

My intention was to negative split this race, but I think I started off a little to quick off the line, and the wind had my number the last mile. Overall, I still took second in my AG, which is a first for me. What better way to reward a training triathlete but with a GC to outback steakhouse!!!!

If anyone is ever in the Charleston area give me buzz. There are events almost every weekend.
