500 miles in 5 days, a different route each of the 10 past years, with ~50 serious cyclists this year, several getting their last long ride in before heading to Kona. Former Gov. Gary Johnson started the race during his first term in 1994 and has ridden each year.
This year the route begins in Sunland Park on the outskirts of El Paso, heads to Deming in flat desert along the Mexico border, then into the Gila mountains and Silver City, rounding out in Los Lunas while riding by the Very Large Array (the cool satellite dishes from the movies). This ride is fully supported at no cost to the riders, although the blocked hotel rooms and travel are your own expense.
Ride (not a race) goes Friday through Tuesday, with breakfast and dinners in each city to celebrate their local road trash cleaning efforts. Riders themselves pick up >1 ton of trash, but the bulk (500+ tons) are picked up by the affected communities.
