Race Report:
This was possibly the nadir of my athletic career, such as it is. Despite taking off a month during bar prep, with the accompanying deconditioning, Debi and I agreed that I should still "try" the 10-miler, since I already knew that I could do the 5k. I figured that I could at least walk it if I had to, regardless of time limits.
It was a gorgeous day, but I was already walking at Mile 3 on Memorial Bridge. I heard people talking behind me, so I figured that at least I wasn't last. I turned around to see them when I saw onlookers waving and cheering at them. That's when I saw their t-shirts: "THIS IS IT!" They described themselves as the walking finish line. Essentially they were the walking sag wagon and they were right on my heels. My heart sank, and I wanted to cry. Good thing my sunglasses were dark.
From then on, every possible negative thought and feeling rained down and took hold, and I couldn't stop it. I just pushed on and tried to dig up motivation to continue. That lasted until about Mile 6, when I felt a sharp, unfamiliar pain in my left knee that was getting worse. That's when I decided to stop.
I have a lot of work to do.
