From Ironman to Irongirl, what a way to go! |
Race Report:
PreRace: Got up at 4:30, had coffee, bagel and banana for breakfast. I was relaxed and had slept fairly well. Usually the night before a race I am up almost every hour. But Vito said this was an “Event and not a race” in the pre-race briefing the day before. So I was looking forward to my “Event” which would be the last one of the season. I got to the park early, set up my transition area, chatted with Margie Shapiro and a few other familiar faces. Did a warm up run and then headed to the swim start. The water was warm and I did a little swimming to get ready.
Swim:17:09 Ageplc:9 The swim is counter clockwise, you could easily site the turn buoy so I lined up on the outside of the herd and made a straight line to the turn. There was lots of traffic but not too much jostling by other competitors.
T1: 2:17 As I was running down the T1 gauntlet I saw a woman in front of me with a “68” on her calf. I was so inspired to see her I turned to try and give her a high five. I slipped and fell. She ended up helping ME off the ground. I apologized for my blunder and hurried up to my bike.
Bike: 56:46 Ageplc: 7 I love this bike route! Lots of hills and turns. I tracked down Linda Kennedy at the High School, passed her shortly after that. I can usually catch up to Linda on the bike, the question would be: Could I hold her off on the run? There was lots of cheering for others as I saw them tackle the hills. Margie Shapiro was already heading back when I was headed for the first turn. It was cool to see her go blazin' by.
Run: 29:37 Ageplc: 16 Clearly I still need to work on this. Another Shenandoah Valley Runners Winter Series will help. The hills on this course are challenging, but familiar since I did Columbia this year and since that's all we have out here in Winchester. Linda Kennedy finally caught up to me as we approached the finish. She made a final surge to beat me by 7 seconds. That was a lot of fun! I will definitely do this race again if it doesn't conflict with the Danskin Tri in Seattle.
Epilogue: I caught up with Karen and Michael Tine while waiting for a massage. It was great to see Karen get so excited about her first race and to exchange race stories. I look forward to this race next year if it doesn't conflict with travel plans to do Dankin in Seattle.
