Solid open water swim (finally) on a beautiful day |
Race Report:
Sunny skies and warm temps plus good water conditions set the stage for a solid open water swim opportunity. The course was laid out as a mile lap course. As this was only my third open water swim ever, I'm still learning about swimming (open water and in the pool) but I felt a little more comfortable and sure of my race plan for today. There was a swim clinic at the lake the day before the race so I had the opportunity to swim most of the mile lap course, which helped to build my confidence and let me practice my open water swimming skills in the lake.
The waves were based on time so the start was very smooth with hardly any bumping and I fell into my pace without any trouble. I took the first lap easy and picked up the pace a little bit for the second and final lap.
I came out of the water with a lot of gas still in the tank but my plan was to get a solid and comfort swim at this distance (this is my longest open water swim to date). I was really happy with my time at this effort. I am doing a full IM distance tri in September so this was a good test of my swim fitness and open water swim skills at this point of the season.
There is a lot of room for improvement but today's results are encouraging and the best part is that there is still a good amount of time left to continue building my open water skills and swim fitness b/f my IM distance tri.
