Good to get out there and compete |
Race Report:
It felt like a long time since I "raced." My first race of this year isn't until Luray and I've been batting an annoying ankle problem so I haven't been running. Life is very busy with two kids in multiple sports so I haven't been out for a nice long weekend bike ride in a while. Like Jamie, I felt like I was in a bit of a training funk. Even though I don't look forward to a "swim only" race nearly as much as a triathlon I was happy to be out there competing. I was also looking forward to using my new wetsuit.
Race morning was pretty uneventful. Got up early, ate a bagel and a banana and headed down to the lake. It was nice catching up with a bunch of fellow RATs. I chatted with Mike Smith, Tony Panizza, Jamie, Dave Orton and Big James.
The race directory said that the water temperature was around 64 or 65 degrees. A bit cold for me but not too bad. I have a sleeveless wetsuit and several people were doing the race with no wetsuit so I figured if they could handle it I would be fine.
I struggled a bit with the water temperature for the first couple of minutes but then I settled in and felt ok. I battled some goggle problems throughout the swim but there were moments where I was swimming along and really enjoying myself. I even felt kind of fast a couple of times. My new two piece wetsuit felt much more comfortable than my previous wetsuit. I'm getting better at swimming straight but I haven't practiced siting at all and I still almost come to a complete stop when I look up to see if I'm going in the right direction. 35 minutes and 11 seconds later I was out of the water eating a roast beef sub and packing things up to go to my daughters soccer game. I was hoping to swim a bit faster but like I said, it was nice to be out there.
I'm definitely looking forward to getting past my ankle problem and adding the bike and the run to my race day!
