Race Report:

Fun race, great cause, friendly crowd. I met a couple of nice folks in the swim line and we congratulated each other afterwards. Saw Keith B on the run course and we hung out a bit after the race.

Woke up at 0-dark-30, ate breakfast and split at 0515. I left my rooting section in bed for this one given the early start and short course.

SWIM: 300 yards 9:49, including T1. (16/24 AG, ??/104 male overall)

My swim sucked. I take two pairs of goggles to swim workouts, because any of my goggles can leak on any given day. No can do on race day, and sure enough, my goggles leaked. Since I am pretty darn near-sighted, I couldn’t afford to lose my contacts, so I had to stop at 3 walls to adjust before I finally got a good seal. A couple of lengths later, time to get out of the pool! Oh well, I was just doing this for fun, so I didn’t sweat it. I’m not a fast swimmer, so I’m only ever competing against myself in the swim anyway.

T1—?? Not separately timed.

BIKE: 17.8 mi. 49:07, 21.7 mph pace. (1/24 AG, 2/104 overall)

This was my first race not on a mountain bike, and boy was it fun. Since I’m still getting used to the feel of a tri bike, I really benefited from the straight course. (Anything more than a slight bend in the road, and I’m up on my base bars.) But I felt great and hammered as much as I could knowing the run was short. I hit a monster bump on the WOD just before going over Rte. 28. It knocked my aero drink out of its Velcro strap, so I had to hold the bottle between my wrists the whole rest of the ride. Turned out that bump took out my front tire too, but it didn’t go flat until 3 hours later and I thankfully finished the bike with no issue.

T2—2:00. I rode & ran without socks. Why does it take me 2 minutes to rack, doff helmet, change shoes and go??

RUN: 2 mi. 14:04. (2/24 AG, 7/104 overall)

This was Part 2 of Why I Bought This Bike. I got out of T2 and flew on the run like I hadn’t ever before after getting off my mountain bike. It was great to actually experience the benefits of tri bike geometry. Not much to say about the run; it was short enough to go all out, which was really fun. In my brain-scrambled state, I headed for the T2 exit mat instead of the finish chute, which cost me a sub 14-min time. But I was ecstatic with my run time after going so hard on the bike.

All in all, a small, fun race with a low-key, local vibe.
