Comment: Longest Ride of My Life!

Race Report:

Wow. This is the longest ride I have ever done by far. We held a very easy pace the whole ride to assure that I would be able to make the distance and it worked. Andrew and I met up with Jen, John and Steve in the morning and rode with them to the 25 mile rest stop, where we split up; they were doing 65 miles and their route was different. The hill that I hate in Leesburg didn't seem nearly as bad as it was last year, which means I'm in a lot better shape! The Stumptown loop for the next 25 miles was killer. I have never rode hills like that before and they even reduced people to walking, but I refused to be one of those people. I just got into an easy rythym and kept churning up the hills that seemed like they were never going to end. Very painful to say the least. Just after 50 miles, we found Mike and Kathy and rode with them the rest of the way. The next 25 miles were rolling hills and my legs were definitely tired of it! I was relieved when we had 25 miles left to go and were headed home. We stopped five times at the rest stops to refuel and grab more water/gatorade, but most of the time that just made my body hurt more! I was so happy by the time we made it back to the Reston Town Center because I had made it through the entire ride. We had a fantastic lunch waiting for us from the Reston Bike Club and then it was on to our house. Oh, it felt good to lie down!

I am proud to say that I rode 103.5 miles at one time for the first time in my life, but the next century I do is going to be flat!!!
