Race Report:
I'm sure that most people would look at a :45 time in a 5k and "for the love of God woman, you're actually going to post that? Have you no shame?"
Yes. No. After a difficult first season, I had problems with consistency in winter training. I hit the pool to strengthen my swimming as defense against swim panic and also followed Friel's weight training program. Unfortunately, I haven't had the consistency I'd like after going through the flu twice in two months. So to run this race with no run preparation and finally break the :15/mile mark (:14:40) and NOT finish DFL, I was ecstatic. Even though I had to walk for about 1/3 of the race, it was the fastest I'd ever done a 5k.
Note to self: Realizing you've run the first mile in 12:39 is not a cause for celebration, not at this point at least. I suffered a lot in mile 2 because of this, and, as I told Sarah and Antonio, found a new max heart rate.
About the event: Outstanding neighborhood race. I loved being able to walk from home to the start and run on roads and trails with which I am very familar. Lots of friendly faces - Sarah, Antonio, David Cascio, and more. Not too crowded. Nice blend of serious competitors and recreational athletes. I'll make this run a part of my permanent calendar and hopefully do the 10 miler next year.
CongRATs to Dave on his strong finish. I swear he looks fast when he's standing still. :)
Next up: the Cherry 10-Miler and 5k. I'd entered the 10-Miler but realized in the depths of Flu II that I wasn't going to be sufficiently prepared to run it. Sure I *could* do it, but I'm not going to kill myself so early in the season. Instead of bailing, I'll run the 5k fun run. Who knows, maybe I'll break :45.
