Kinetic Sprint Triathlon - 750m/18 miles/5K
Spotsylvania, VA - April 24,2005

Swim: 20:24
T1: 5:50
Bike: 1:08:50
T2: 2:46
Run: 33:27
Total: 2:02:41

Weather was cold and windy, temp in the 40's, water they said was
about 62F, not exactly a prefect day for a tri. The event is well
run and organized. Got to the park little over an hour before the
race. Got my packet and stuff and took the bike to set up T1/2.
Lots of folks moving slower than usual, but putting wet suits on
earlier than usual to get warm in them. Fingers not wanting to move
very easily, not a good sign.

Went down by the water, too cold to even try big toe and see how cold
it was, plenty of time for that after the gun I figure. A guy next to
me says that he usually gets in the water and swims a little but not
today, waitin for the start too. We old men are in the third wave, at
8:08, purple hats. Finally our turn to go and we all scamper into the
water, wade for a while and finally start to swim. It is indeed cold
and as it gets into the wet suit, is chilling. After a short way, it's
hard to breathe and the stroke is not what you do in the pools for sure.
My head is more out of the water than in, but getting used to it. After
a short ways, someone notices that we are in chest deep water so about half
of the group is walking again. I try that, is slower than swimming but
can breathe and get used to the temp of the cold water. After a short
while, ready to go again so start to swim again. Is much better this time,
can swim along and breathe and actually put face in the water. The chop due
to the wind is annoying and forces breathing on only one side away from the
wind. The rest of the swim is uneventful, actually catch a few in the group
in front of us and of course, am passed by some of the faster young women
in the wave behind us. Nothing new.

Out of the water, trying to run, feet cold not real happy about the
thought of running barefoot up to T1 but moving anyway in protest. On the
way up the sidewalk, see my daughter Dawn holding her daughter Alyson (20
months old). I give them a hi and touch the baby's nose for good luck. She
gives granpa a smile. Into T1, wet suit off ok, but then things get tough.
The fingers not working well at all, hard to get clothes and shoes on. Finally
on and off with the bike. Ride was pretty good, not too cold except feet getting
colder, not really feel the toes, less and less as time goes on. I know the
roads around here so it is a fun ride for me on familiar territory. Back into
the park and down to T2, don't see the kids on the way in and wonder where they
could be hiding to get warm.

T2 is slow as once again fingers not real happy about moving and doing things
and no feelings in toes either. Get going and as run out, see Dawn and the
baby again, they are volunteers directing runners on where to go. Her husband
Chris is down further doing the same. (They all three got vol t-shirts for
helpin tho the baby's is a little, say a lot, big.)

The run is very slow for me, my feet end at my ankles, not at the toes like
usually. Seems wierd to be running on them. Have to walk some but get thru
it, pass Dawn and Chris on the way back (the baby is now asleep in the car,
volunteering too much excitement I guess). Down the hill and into the
finish chute. I go see Dawn and the pack stuff up and put into the car.
After they get done, we all go have some pizza and oreo cookies, good food
for after a race. We decide to hang around to see if I placed. I knew that
there were 6 in my age group at sign in. Low and behold, I get third and a
cool shirt. Will wonders never ceease.

On way out, talked to a gal, all excited, her first tri. She wasn't real sure
of her time, somewhere between 2:10 and 2:15 she thought but she, like the rest
of us, was hooked. "I'm goona do another" she exclaimed to me, all excited.
Another tri geek created.

All in all, a fun day, wx could have sure been a lot better but still,
better than a good day at work.
