Solid race but could not recover for following weekend |
Race Report:
[Written in 2005.]
I decided to do this race around 3PM the day before. My impulsiveness required that I drive out to Leesburg in order to register. Why? I was planning my 2003 season and wondering if I could recover from a Labor Day half marathon (i.e Rock and Roll Half) in time for say, Reston. The scientific, geeky side of me got tired of speculating and decided to conduct an experiment.
I had never previewed the course so I got a nice surprise after the first gentle miles of Dry Mill as we turned up Woodburn. Longest hill I think I've ever had to run. I had some good training runs the last few weeks so I felt strong even after I crested Woodburn and moved on to the roller of Harmony Church. There was an off-road section that was a little treacherous due to gravel as I plunged back downhill. Felt good until we got to the W&OD at Hamilton. Then I started laboring a little. The Rt 9 climb in the final mile was a killer, and a race photographer captured a less than flattering photo of me coming in. Final mile was probably a 12:00, but the rest of the race had been good, and I was pleased that I had basically equaled my Virginia Beach time on a much hillier course. Post race pizza was good too.
Results of Experiment: Not so good, but those details are in the Osprey Sprint report.
