Comment: Beautiful and Challenging Cross Country 10K

Race Report:

Goal time: sub 44:00 (7:04/mile pace or faster)
Actual time: 42:45 (6:53/mile pace)

With temps in the low 50's and an overcast sky (but no rain), the weather conditions were pretty good for running. The previous night's rain left the course wet and muddy, but the course conditions weren't bad enough to force runners to slow their pace over the hilly and mostly dirt road course. There were only a couple of very short sections of the course that took runners onto paved roads.

The start/finish line was located at the top of hill in a grass field next to the Ida Lee Park Recreation Center. This location had runners charging down the hill at the start and charging back up the hill to finish. From top to bottom, the hill is about 300 meters or so.

There were plenty of race officials on hand to keep everyone on course - this had been an issue last year. There was also one well placed water station that runners passed twice, which was sufficient considering the cool weather conditions.

The were lots of yummy treats and music at the recreation center after the race. A Fun Run took place before the 10K so lots of families and kids were around in addition to the typical crowd of 10K runners.

Overall, this was a well organized and challenging 10K, with a very family-friendly atmosphere. If you're a fan of trail running and/or have fond memories of your cross-country days from H.S and/or college, you might want to add this race to your calendar.

A nice bonus is that since the race takes place on New Year's Day every year the start time for the 10K is around 10:45 or so.
