Tallying up my sprints for the season, I’m pretty happy. Improvement all around. I still have a long way to go, but at least I’m moving in the right direction!
Giant Acorn was a great race—not only did I do PRs all around, but the swim was the perfect temperature in comparatively clean water (a few too many rocks, though), the bike was just hilly enough and through some scenic roads, and the run was conveniently right along the last leg of the bike, allowing me to see Melissa and Kevin running by as I finished the bike.
I was planning to give the race my all, even though I had been pretty sore and beaten up the weeks leading up to the race. After Dewey, I had bonked and DNFed at my next race (a half marathon trail run) and had been having muscle aches and pains ever since. I think my plan to completely rest the three days before GA was a good one—not sure I would have made any PRs had I not rested. The rest gave me the right amount of energy and drive to attack the course at a steady pace—not killing myself, but not letting up either.
Everything seemed to be just right the day of the race. No stomach problems, which has been something I’ve struggled with for years now with my racing (from running to tris), so I felt well fueled—the salt potato and roasted chicken lunch and pasta dinner the day before definitely helped. I was hydrating well on the bike, timing myself to drink every ten minutes or so. And I didn’t start too hard on the run, allowing me to keep a steady strong pace until the end. It was great to finally put into practice what I’ve been learning the past year, and I feel I’ve successfully finished my first year of triathlons! Well, nearly—I have one more race this weekend—an Olympic down in South Carolina where I’m hoping for PRs in that distance as well. I’m resting this entire week, focusing on light yoga, stretching, rest, and hydration/nutrition. I think that’s going to do me more good than any bike, run, or swim at the moment—I’ll find out Saturday if I’m right.
