Great race, juts a bit cold at the start |
Race Report:
Pre-race: --------- Woke up at 3am.... Yeap... that's hard :) Went to DC to pick up a friend at a hotel and meet another one at his place. Used the metro to get there.
It was just a very chilly morning. I still wonder why do they put a race start at 7 am in March. Getting there at 5:30-6:00 am in the dark with temperatures in the 32-34 is just not the most pleasant type of morning :) But anyway, the mood and atmosphere was good, coming with friends.
I managed to seed my self in the corral #2 a few minutes before the race where I met Kevin that was doing the full marathon.
Race objective: --------------- This was a B-race for me. I considered this race more as a long tempo training to be ready for my coming HIM as I am just finishing my base training. My strategy was to take it easy the first half and push the second half as I did not want to re-iterate my mistakes from my last 1/2 marathon. I had pushed too hard at the beginning last year and I suffered the last few miles with a drastic decrease in speed.
Surprisingly, I felt well today, maybe simply because I did not pressure myself to do any "good" time. I ran on feel and it just happened to be a good day.
Race results: ------------- I executed my plan and I finished the race in good shape, strong the whole 2nd part. Finish time : 1:31:23 Pace : 7:00 Overall rank: 117 / 4000+ AG rank : 20 / 373
That's better than what I had planned for (I was shooting for a time around 1:36 / 7:20 pace). And that's also better than last year in Quantico, I finished in 1:34:02. So that's a bit of improvement. I am quite happy to have done this time knowing I am not yet at my peak time (no laps training and few tempo run so far).
Well done to Dave Cascio that finished 3rd of his AG in 1:21:47
HR Details: ----------- My HR was very stable at 163 avg +/-2 (middle Z4) My laps: 1: 6:56 / 159 avg 2: 6:56 / 159 avg 3: 6:59 / 162 avg 4: 7:06 / 163 avg 5: 7:05 / 163 avg 6: 7:10 / 164 avg -- up hill 7: 7:21 / 165 avg -- up hill 8: 6:50 / 164 avg ** started pushing harder for the 2nd half 9: 6:49 / 164 avg 10: 6:40 / 163 avg 11: 6:58 / 163 avg 12: 7:10 / 164 avg -- up hill 13.1: 7:19 / 165 avg -- up hill
Best lap : 6:40 Average HR: 163 Max HR : 171
