Race Report:

This was the first overnight race I brought the girls to. Needless to say, the stress level was high. Between my twins and Grandma, I had my work cut out for me on Sunday Morning. The car was loaded up on Saturday with hopes of making to Charlottesville with plenty of time for the girls to enjoy the hotel pool and that they did! I got everyone settled in for the evening and lights were out by 11pm. The alarm went off and the chaos began. You all know what it is like...the pre-game ritual...well just imagine trying to do that with twin 3 year olds and an 88 year old Grandma. WOW! By the time I waded into the water for the wave 4 start, I felt like I was unprepared, remembering I even forgot to set my gears for the uphill start. Nothing I could do about it now. The swim was really quite beautiful. I struggled a bit with my choice of sighting and I had a problem with a frantic kick. Still, it was a short swim and by the time I exited the water, I was still trying to find my mojo. I came out at 10:51 and in 2nd age group. T1 went smooth and I was out in 1:25. For those of you not familiar with the Charlottesville triathlon series, it is a hilly and technical course...and...for those of you that know me...my worst discipline is the bike. Nonetheless, I convinced myself to ride as hard as I could. My goal was to come in under an hour and I missed it by 57 seconds. I like to blame it on the five minute climb at the beginning of the ride. That burned!!! I came into T2 and was really concerned about my achilles injury on the trails. I laced up quickly and off I went. The trail run was a blast. Some tricky ground, climbs, and roots all added to the fun. In retrospect, I wish I would have taken a more aggressive passing strategy. I could have shaved off some time. I came in at 25:29. My time of 1:39 was good enough for a 1st place age group win.
