Race Report:

Category:4
Course : 20 mi/23 Laps x .85 miles - Flat/Flat/Flat
Finish:6th (shelled lead-out)

Imagine my excitement - my new Zipp 404 with Power Tap arrived yesterday. Last night I wrestled a new Pro 3 onto in and put a nice Dura-Ace Ti cassette on. This morning I put it on the bike and tried to get it talking to my computer. No Dice. It just would not shake hands with my head unit. So instead of focusing on the race I was messing around in the parking lot trying to get the thing working. With about 20 minutes to race time, I gave up, swapped to an old wheel and warmed up on the rollers.

Pre-race chatter was good. I knew Phil and Simon were on board with a good old fashion leadout train and a winning sprint, but Mike Ahlers seemed to have something else in mind. A strong four-man train can count on winning Syn-fit, but a three man train needs something extra to ensure a victory. My backup plan was to have the train (Phunk, Me then Simon) hug onto Joaquin's (from Coppi - he is always in good position going into the last lap) wheel and then push the pace the entire last lap. If Mike was off the front, the leader would have to judge whether we would be ruining his party or not.

Race started a bit fast, but manageable. Despite the short warm up, I felt great. I kept tweaking my position to stay in the sweet spot. For the first half of the race the sweet spot was about 20 deep because the peleton was forming an arrowhead around the back stretch. Early on, Mike fell back through the pack and mentioned to me that he was feeling bad. After about 11 laps it was clear that everyone was settling in. If Auto-lap intervals is correct in my power file, I had a lap where I averaged 150w but 24.1 mph !

With 6 to go, I realized we had not see Simon the whole race. If he was still on, it was at the back. I didn't really want to give up my sweet spot, but knew that WWVC had a better chance with him in the top 10 during the sprint, so I gave up ground and worked my way back. Found him with 5.5 to go and told him to latch on. I moved up slowly, torn between moving through the pack (preserve my own power, but I know it makes Simon nervous) or going out into the wind. My Goal was to find Phunk with 2 to go and talk him into fighting for top 5 position. I found Phil's wheel with 2 to go, but had lost Simon. Mike was up on the front of the pack trading pulls, so I knew he was feeling better. With a little more than one to go, I realized Mike was off the front with a partner (All-American) - they created a good gap, so just maybe ?

Anyway, I talked to Phil quite a bit, telling him to fight for his position (while I owned his wheel) - he did great - using his shoulder width to hold onto the wheels in front of him. Around the back stretch I saw a nice opportunity to move up one or two places on the outside and find Joaquin's wheel - I also felt I had a good leadout in my legs. I talked to Phil, asked if he could do the sprint (he said yes) and then moved forward. About 100 yards from the last corner is where I made my move. If PT is correct, Phil and I hit that corner going 34.5 miles per hour. Felt like we were leaning pretty darn hard. Coming out of the corner I found a wheel to surf for about 25 yards, saw Ahlers going backwards, then started sprinting. I died with about 75 yards to go. Phil then came around me in a blaze of glory. He was spinning like crazy, but making ground on the leader (Mike's All-American break partner). Awesome job getting second PHIL !! He missed by an inch or less. If I had left a few seconds earlier - just maybe.

I couldn't pedal so I just yelled at Phil and rolled over the line in 6th All $20 of my winnings were donated to Wounded Warriors.

PS - I checked the results right when they were posted and I was not on them, I protested in the allotted 20 mins. and got it corrected. Lesson for those who are on that board more often than I am.
