Run sucked, especially since I sat in on the bike. |
Race Report:
Well that sucked. I went a little faster on the swim than I expected (mid-59 ... and that was with a faaaaar-edge start). That's on limited swim training (maybe an average of 3,000m/week, yes, week, for 4 months leading into the race).
The bike was about what I expected (6:40 ... I was thinking 6:30, but I stopped & chilled at some aid stations just to be sure I was chilling).
And then a crappy run. I thought I had sub 3:50 run shape going in, but I ended up with GI issues. Rachel caught me on her first loop & we run-walked my last 6 miles together. I thought I was being a big wimp on the run, but it turns out my GI issues stayed until 9 or 10 pm the NEXT DAY. WTF? The whole point of these things is to finish & eat like a king after the race.
This is a burly, fun, hard course. It is slightly less burly, but in the same league as Silverman, imho. Others will disagree, but it's splitting hairs. I think the Silverman bike is objectively harder. Weather, run and other variables can even things up. We had a pretty hot day, but I don't feel like it was stupidly hot for an average performance (it's not like the heat is going to tip you toward/away from a PR here).
Maybe the heat affected my GI issues. Perhaps the most unique thing about this race for me was that I just didn't care why things fell apart. Just a bad day I guess. I have a pretty good review of the race course tucked away, I will get that up here and add a little more insight later.
Oh well. I had a good winter of training.
