Race Report:

I'd signed myself and my father up for this race many months before, looking to do something a little more than find a funny card for dad. He's been running & lifting quite a bit lately, and he was asking about a race. What better day than Father's Day I thought.

When I registered us, I was in the best training groove of my life. When I toe'd the line, I was almost 10 lbs heavier and definitely out of the training groove. Oh well, it's about hanging with Dad, not setting PRs.

I tried to convince my father that we should run together, but he insisted that we run our own races and that he'd tell people only our combined 10K time and let them wonder about the splits :)

Alan Webb started the race, and we were off into the Reston Paths. I tried to follow Mark Mollander, but that ended very soon. Then two more guys passed me. Then I hit no man's land and ran my own pace. At least my left calf wasn't sore, as it had been all week.

In the end, I ran one of the worst open 5Ks I've run in years at 17:48. Now that I've finally gotten around to writing the race report, I realize that it scared me good and got me back into a training groove.

Better yet, Dad broke 30 with a 29:35 in his first 5k ever. And best of all, we hit the Vienna Inn for breakfast and a beer. Now that's a Father's Day!
