Wicked fast current on the swim |
Race Report:
Most surprising thing: swim time of 12:30*
Best part of course: They closed all Northbound traffic on the Hudson Parkway. And, running in Central Park is always fun.
Most cool thing: Hanging around the pros, listening them talk about the racing circuit
Things to fix: I love running in Central Park, but the tri runners were intermingled with the regular Sunday joggers. It would have been nice to carry the "special" feeling the bike provided into the park; of course, I understand the logistical nightmare this presents. Lousy post-race food selection (but lots of free Gatorade), but I'm never a big eater after races anyway. Besides, the BEST thing about NYC is that a slice of pizza can be found, cheap, on any corner. Yummm.
Do it again? Yes, but I will not drive, at least not on Fri, Sat, or Sun. Traffic: yuck. I've driven to New York a bunch ... but never during the summer.
Here's how the Times saw it http://www.nytimes.com/2001/08/13/sports/13TRIA.html

* 2-knot current in the Hudson, which is pretty darn clean, and quite salty. The swim was just bizarre. I remember breathing to my left and watching a moored sailboat pass by like I was biking past it.
