great start to the New Year |
Race Report:
I convinced my wife Leslie the day before we should run the race at Leesburg. Looking at last years times I thought she would have a good shot at winning. I wanted a hard race to test my fitness. I am training for a marathon and have mostly given up biking and swimming. I was also looking for an excuse not to run long on Sunday.
We got there early since we had not pre-registered. Saw some folks we know from Reston Runners. Did a warm up and ran the first mile of the course. We had no clue what the course was like so it was a good thing we ran the start and finish as a warm up. Leslie ran cross country in college but I never have so it was an experience for me.
I got stuck at the middle of the pack at the start so it took me a little to get going. I caught Amanda about a mile into the race and introduced myself. The course was pretty tough on my legs. I usually passed people on the uphills and got passed going back down but overall I was passing more people in the 2nd half of the race.
Finished in under 46 minutes, about 3 minutes slower than the Veterans Day 10K in November but this was a much tougher course - the hills and the surface. Leslie finished 3rd - she got passed on the last hill. She was more than 3 minutes slower than the Veterans Day race so I felt good about my time.
I still ran 13 miles on Sunday since I only have 8 weeks until the marathon. My quads were pretty sore from the course but I was still faster than when I ran the same loop 6 weeks ago so I guess my running fitness is improving. I will let you know how it turns out.
