Race Report:

My training vacation in Utah started out at the Ogden Valley Triathlon. Many things conspired to make this a less-than-outstanding performance for me:

(1) I had a bit of a cold/allergy/sinus blockage coming from DC
(2) I flew into Salt Lake City the previous afternoon
(3) Not enough sleep leading up to the race
(4) Four beers night before the race
(5) Used standard bike wheels instead of racing wheels
(6) No acclimatization to altitude
(7) Sleeveless wetsuit in low 60sF water
(8) With heaving volume training to come later in the week, I didn't want to risk damage to myself.

So, I got what I deserved, which was a literal chokefest as I choked on my own bodily fluids (saliva and snot) throughout the race.

Still, this event does pretty well on the Cost-Benefit Analysis due to very low price ($50) and good post-race food (including ribs and grilled trout from local restaurants). The race includes two laps around Pineview Reservoir, so you get a good view of the entire valley. Altitude, winds, cool temperatures and extended bicycle distance contribute to the challenge of this race.

There was also a wide spectrum of talent here. A total of 700+ participants in both the "Oly" and the associated sprint-distance event. Everyone struggled mightily in the water, but it was apparent that some could easily hold their own and most others were not comfortable in the water. The race winner is a former professional triathlete, and the next two finishers are both going to Kona this year.
