The swim is a double out-and-back in the Russian River. The bike course starts at the Russian River, and travels several miles before reaching a loop that you do twice. Most of the bike course is gently rolling. There is one noteable hill: Chalk Hill, which isn't terribly long. The run is flat, but there is no shade, and it can be very hot. There's more information (including an elevation profile of the bike course) here: http://www.sftriclub.org/training/bike/courses/vineman/
Since this is in wine country, it's much less humid than Northern Virginia in August. While that CAN be nice, the lack of humidity means that temperatures can vary widely during the day. When I did the race, for the first 45 minutes of the bike, I was so cold I was shivering. By the time I got to the run, it was 90 degrees F, and there wasn't a cloud in the sky.
