Name: Amanda Shuman
Location: Santa Cruz, CA
Age Group: Female 40 - 44
About Me: http://people.ucsc.edu/~ashuman
What I do to pay the bills: PhD student, slave to the university (TA) and part-time web programming and server monkey®
Who defends the ranch when I'm out training: Two other roommates who also like to hike, go rock climbing, mountain biking and all the other fun outdoorsy stuff.
Short term triathlon goals: Improve swimming technique. Get stronger overall.
Long term triathlon goals: Go longer... like to an Ironman. But it has to be a fun Ironman. Is that possible?
Fantasy triathlon goals: Win or place at an Ironman with cash awards.
Three favorite albums: U2 - How to Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, All That You Can't Leave Behind, Best of 1980-1990. It's hard to go wrong with U2.
Tiesto - Just Be (house/trance)
Jamie Cullum - Catching Tales (vocal jazz)
Favorite book: Catcher in the Rye (Salinger), Fountainhead (Rand), Cat's Cradle (Vonnegut), Siam Mapped (Thongchai), Silencing the Past (Trouillot), Training the Body for China (Brownell), Les Jeux Sont Faits (Sartre)
Favorite movie: L'Auberge Espagnole.
Chocolate: at least once a day, and often again before and after dinner.
Garlic: yum
Blue Cheese: allergic to milk and cheese
For breakfast, I usually have: cereal with fresh fruit (strawberries, blueberries, etc) or protein bread with either soy nut butter and organic low sugar strawberry preserves (healthy pb & j) or with fresh avocado and some turkey on top. A soy latte if it's in the budget and if not french press coffee or stove top expresso. Don't mess with my caffeine.
After a long day of training, my favorite meal is: Nutella and banana crepe for dessert. Soy chocolate soy milkshake. Salmon, rice or quinoa with cherry tomatoes, green beans, or squash. But if I'm eating out it will be Los Pinos or Tacqueria Vallarta: pollo tostada, pollo tacos, tortilla chips and fresh guac and salsa.
My best triathlon advice is: Don't worry, the swim isn't really that bad... sort of. [start of my first tri in the pacific: "Once you get past the swell it isn't that bad"]
You learn to like the pain so much it is no longer pain but pleasure. Seriously.
My best non-triathlon advice is: Enjoy yourself! Don't do anything you really don't like to do and this should include your job.
Enjoy being outside and in nature as much as possible!
What was I thinking when I signed up for my first race: Swimming can't be that hard to learn.... it's just like running and biking, right?
Everything I need to know I learned from: my mom, dad, and the cat
My deepest, darkest secret is: the first concert I ever went to was NKOTB.

and the truth is, the next concert I go to may also be NKOTB. Funny how that works...
