1. Aaron Schwartzbard: There are two obvious ways to get to Lake Placid from Northern Virginia. The western route starts up I-270. The eastern route starts up I-95. The western route is about 30 miles longer, but it's prettier, there's less traffic and there are no tolls. Each route takes between eight and nine hours. I prefer the western route (270 (or 15) to 70 to 81 to 88 to 87).

Sure, it might be the middle of summer, and it might be hot and humid at home, but it's not unusual for the temperature to go down to the 50s during the nights in late July. Bring something warm.

After you drop off your dry clothes bag on race morning, you'll have to walk somewhere between .25 and .5 mile to drop off your special needs bags and get to the lake. Since you'll only have your swim gear, you'll have nothing on your feet. If you'd prefer not to walk around for a half hour in bare feet, bring a pair of throw away shoes (cheap sandles) to wear, and throw them away just before you get into the lake.
